The banker who prosecutors say helped Alex Murdaugh move millions of dollars around to avoid detection of his thefts in exchange for a share of the money has had his conviction and seven-year prison sentence overturned on appeal.

A Fourth Circuit federal appellate tribunal composed of U.S. Circuit Court Judges G. Steven Agee, Stephanie Thacker, and Toby J. Heytens rendered the Nov. 14 order that vacated the conviction from the U.S. District Court of South Carolina, and the sentence imposed by federal Judge Richard Gergel.

A federal court has reversed the conviction of Alex Murdaugh’s alleged fraud accomplice Russell Laffitte, according to court records. On Thursday, a panel of judges in the US 4th Circuit Court of Appeals handed down a 37-page unanimous ruling overturning Laffitte's conviction.

Russell Laffitte had been serving a seven-year sentence after being convicted on six counts of bank fraud. His conviction was thrown out on appeal.

Laffitte, 53, has been serving a seven-year sentence at the minimum-security Coleman Low Federal Correctional Institution in Sumterville, Fla., It was not immediately known how the Nov. 14 ruling from the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., would affect his detention or whether federal prosecutors would seek to retry the case.
