COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The banker who prosecutors said helped Alex Murdaugh move millions of dollars around to avoid detection of his thefts in exchange for a share of the money had his conviction and seven-year prison sentence overturned on appeal Thursday.

A Fourth Circuit federal appellate tribunal composed of U.S. Circuit Court Judges G. Steven Agee, Stephanie Thacker, and Toby J. Heytens rendered the Nov. 14 order that vacated the conviction from the U.S. District Court of South Carolina, and the sentence imposed by federal Judge Richard Gergel.

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A court of appeals has overturned the sentence and conviction of Russell Laffitte, the former banker and Alex Murdaugh accomplice who was sent to prison for a slew of financial-related crimes, according to new court filings.

Laffitte, 53, has been serving a seven-year sentence at the minimum-security Coleman Low Federal Correctional Institution in Sumterville, Fla., It was not immediately known how the Nov. 14 ruling from the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Va., would affect his detention or whether federal prosecutors would seek to retry the case.
